There are several general factors to consider when trying to determine if you are possibly at risk to develop breast cancer. Some of these include:

Late menopause or early menstrual cycle. What this means is that any girl that starts menstruating before the age of 12 is at a high risk for developing breast cancer. Similarly, a woman whose menopausal cycle doesn't kick in until after the age of fifty are at high risks as well.

Age is considered to be another factor in determining the amount of risk. Studies have shown that younger women (i.e. those between the ages of twenty and forty) have much less risk of developing the disease than women who are fifty and over.

Birth control pills are somewhat controversial in that, there is a small increase in risk, but it is generally thought that this alone is not significant enough to be a leading cause of development of breast cancer.
Radiation is another risk factor. Studies have shown that people exposed to radiation in childhood have an increased risk.

Gender can be considered a risk factor. It should be noted here that men can and do get breast cancer but they are far less likely to develop the disease than women are. The main reason for this is the difference in hormonal development between the sexes, however the reasons behind this and its effects are still not clearly understood.

As breast cancer is a disease that is on the rise, there are several things that can be done to help prevent its development. The main thing that we can all do, both men and women (men can get this disease as well) is to adopt and maintain a healthier lifestyle. Way to do this include: eating more greens and fiber and having a lower fat intake, exercising regularly, getting enough rest and adopting a positive outlook on life.

Now, that last one may have some of you scratching your head, but it is integral. We become what we think about. So the more we keep our thoughts upbeat, the more good things "seem to" happen to us. When one is happy and content, the body responds to that and gives more energy and heightened immune levels. Conversely, when one is not, we feel tired and possibly sick.

The tips listed above are generally common sense and go a long way to helping prevent breast cancer. I will cover a couple of options you may not know about below.

One prevention method is known as chemoprevention. Essentially, this is the use of drugs. For breast cancer in particular selective estrogen receptor modulator is used. What this drug does is block estrogen absorption in the receptors, which causes any cancer cells to stop growing.

Cancer is a horrible disease. Not only the people who suffer from this fatal illness are in a painful position, but also the families and friends of such people who see their loved ones losing heart and life while they are fighting against cancer. Cancer is a dangerous disease. At present there are few techniques which are used by the doctors and scientists to make it possible for the cancer patients to recover from this deadly disease. There are more than one reasons of triggering cancer growth in human body and one of the reasons as far as the scientific development tells us today, is genetic. If a person happens to inherit some kind of weakness from his or her parents which make him or her more vulnerable towards melanoma, we can very easily trace back the genetic link to melanoma.

There are certain types of skin and other cancers which are not very dangerous. By this statement we mean that these types are not fatal. If such a cancer is treated in the right way on the right time, it is very much probable that a person can recover from the disease. But there are other kinds of cancers which are fatal. The melanoma cancer is the type which is not very easily curable. If it is noticed in the earlier stages, it may be get rid of by the doctors help. But in case the disease gets time to flourish inside the body of the victim, it becomes difficult for the doctors even to help the patient. Some of the kinds are really painful and this is the worst part. The new scientific findings tell us that it is possible now to trace the genetic link to Melanoma in case a person is suffering from it. May be all the genes are not responsible for falling ill from cancer, but there are few gens which are weak, and can lead to melanoma.

Along them the last three are the melanomas that occur mainly on the superficial layer of the skin. They remain on the top layer for much of the time before becoming invasive.
